Private Autism (ASD) Assessments for Children

I am Anne Marie Gallagher, an experienced speech and language therapist with a career spanning over 25 years, having worked extensively with the NHS in Scotland and being one of the authors of the SIGN 145 guidelines. I also work with the National Diagnostic Assessment Service (NDAS), which offers an all-age national autism assessment service in Scotland and beyond.

My lifelong passion and commitment to providing a reliable pathway for autism diagnosis and assessments have led me to work with NDAS to offer child autism assessment services. I’ve spent my career helping autistic children and adults from diverse backgrounds, offering both high-quality autism assessments as well as mental health and facilitating peer-to-peer support.

While my clinical emphasis has centred on diagnosing and assisting adults with autism, I recognise the struggles children with autism face, especially in light of their learning challenges. At NDAS we provide private child autism assessments, typically face to face ensuring families receive compassionate guidance and accurate insights to support their child’s well-being.

How It Works

Autism presentations vary amongst children, based on their age, environment and developmental milestone markers. Some children tend to show signs of autism early on, while others exhibit learning difficulties and other behavioural traits in a later academic environment. Autism assessments for children at NDAS can be a great starting point and bring you much-needed clarity, providing your child with the support and help they need.

Child autism assessments require a thorough information-gathering procedure, which often involves in-depth interviews with parents or carers. This is an important step because it allows me to determine whether these are truly autistic traits or if they are caused by other conditions that are not related to autism.

This information then helps NDAS make a holistic assessment, taking into account developmental history, observations from parents and carers and other specific concerns. As a result, families can expect to receive an autism test for their children that is highly personalised, professional, inclusive and accurate.

NDAS uses educational psychologists, nurse practitioners and education specialists to complete assessments. Most NDAS assessments are conducted face-to-face at the diagnostic centre in Glasgow to provide the most thorough and accurate results. In exceptional circumstances, online assessments can be offered, for example, when someone cannot travel to the centre. However, if there are any doubts about the outcome of the online assessment, then face-to-face follow-up appointments will be arranged at no extra cost to ensure that the results are accurate.

Benefits of Child Autism Assessments

Autism tests for children come with several benefits, including clarity, understanding, and access to crucial support for your child. This includes everything from educational accommodations to therapeutic support. Accurate assessments also help family members, teachers and peers better understand and support autistic children.

For example, a formal autism diagnosis is mandatory to access the Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) in England and Coordinated Support Plan (CSP) in Scotland. This could allow your child to receive a dedicated teacher assistant (TA), assistive technologies for learning, and concessions for exams.

A timely diagnosis can pave the way for early intervention programmes to support your child’s academic and developmental outcomes, including improvements in social skills, behaviours and other learning abilities.
